Research into the Parentage of John Hampton born 1623

John Hampton born in 1623 and his sisters Sarah born 1625 and Ann born 1627 are correctly placed in the family tree. However, who are their parents? There are two contenders for this position.

John Hampton born 1595 in Lambeth, Surrey, who married in 1619 and John Hampton born 1606 in Urchfont, Wiltshire.
    John born 1606

If he was the father of John born 1623, then he would have been only 17 when his son was born. Not unheard of, human nature being what it is, but how likely?

If John (born 1606) did marry at age 17 then we have only a short window of research. Nothing was found in this time frame for a marriage in Wiltshire.

The search was extended to include the possibility of the marriage taking place AFTER the event of his son’s birth. Searching between the years 1623 and 1630 only 2 marriages were found in 1627. These took place in Great Wishford in Wiltshire which is about 15 miles south of Market Lavington. One marriage took place on the 6th June 1627 of a John to Margaret ? and the other on 18 June 1627 of a John to a Amheret Vooke. There is the possibility that the parents made them wait until they reached 21 years of age but maybe that idea is a stretch too far. Having searched neighbouring counties there is nothing that shouts at me.

The John born 1606 in Urchfont had a father named Robert. I found 2 baptism records for this John. One was the son of Robert and baptised 14 March 1606 and the other was the son of a Mr Robert Hampton baptised 17 April 1606. This might suggest that the Mr Robert was a Gentleman or of some standing in the community.

The problem here is that John could have been the last in a long line of children or the first, so it was necessary to search for Robert’s marriage (in the hope it may come up with some answers) between 1580 and 1606. There was nothing found in Wiltshire except the big brick wall. There was no other luck either, searching neighbouring counties.

The problem is when searching this far back is on the marriage records no parents’ names are included and on baptism records only the father’s name is present, unlike post 1837. Also, many records were badly kept or lost. It would have been so satisfying in many ways to have proved a link to John 1606 but there are not any reliable conclusions.

    John Hampton born 1595.
It is already known that this John married in 1619 in Southwark but that does not necessarily mean he is the right link either. We need to explore the reasons why this couple may have moved to Wiltshire. Ravensteins Law is okay to a point but it doesn’t account for the exceptions.

The population of London in 1600 was already 250,000. There was poverty, filth, fleas and rats. There were 3 outbreaks of Bubonic Plague in the Southwark region in 1603, 1633 and 1665. The 17th century saw a population explosion. The cloth industry declined, also brass and wire making fell victim to the more successful companies in the Midlands.

At the beginning of the following century, a Howell ancestor moved from Surrey to Wiltshire. I feel that some people moved out of the London Boroughs at various times both for work and the chance of a better environment.

Unfortunately, whatever we feel about these arguments above, it still does not make either of the 2 John’s the correct one. There just is not the substantial evidence to prove one way or other which is correct.

My mind is open and it would be good to know how you feel about this situation.

We are safe knowing John born 1623 is correct and I’m sorry I can’t prove any links further back.

If you like, I’ll see if I can add this document to the John Hampton 1623 and see if anyone else out there comes up with new evidence.

    Birth:
With reference to the article Research into the Parentage of John Hampton born 1623, here is a little footnote.
A marriage was found in the All England Select Marriages 1538 - 1973, that referred to a John Hampton who married an Amheret Vooke.
Martin was very intrigued by this name and crossed checked it with his Wiltshire records. The name should read Anchoret
Larke. Martin looked up the name Anchoret and it is of Welsh origin and means 'much loved'

John married Mary Harris on 08 May 1654 in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, England. Mary (daughter of Thomas Harris and Elizabeth (Harris)) was christened on 17 Jan 1626 in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, England; was buried on 24 Jun 1702 in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, England. 2. 3.  Mary Harris was christened on 17 Jan 1626 in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, England (daughter of Thomas Harris and Elizabeth (Harris)); was buried on 24 Jun 1702 in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, England.

    Birth:
This birth date is nothing more than a wild guess - that she was about 20 when she married.

    Notes:

    Married:
Mary's surname was not on the marriage transcript, nether could it be found on any of her children's baptism transcripts. Did a "wild" search for a Mary born in Great Cheverell about the same time as her husband John.
There is no definate answer but it could have been:
    Mary Franklin born 1626
    Mary Harris born 1626 or
    Mary Jones born 1628

30 minutes after last note, now think its quite likely that Mary's surname was Harris as her father was a farmer and her husband was a husbandsman!
