      THERE IS A SON of JOHN and MARY, ALSO CALLED JOHN, who ACCORDING TO FMP and WANTAGE PARISH RECORDS WAS BORN 3 JAN 1728 AND CHRISTENED ON THE 5 JAN 1728.
      IF HIS BROTHER THOMAS WAS BORN JULY 1727, THIS MAKES THE DATE OF JOHN'S BIRTH QUESTIONABLE. A premature baby's chance of survival in 1728 would be nil, most likely, and there is no burial record for this time.

      KENNETH had his birth down as 1730 but I cannot find any corresponding records. There is nothing online or in Wantage Parish Records for 1730.

      Having double checked the Wantage records which I have on CD the date appears to be Jan 1728. I am now wondering if the date was a transcription error, as sometimes happens. if the date could have been Jun/June then that is more acceptable.
      I have amended the date for our records but please be aware everyone!
      In 1728 the UK was still using the Julian Calendar (March - March) I'm not sure that makes much difference. The UK converted to the Gregorian Calender in 1752 (Jan 1st - Dec 31st).

    • John Richings (Richins) senior may well have been born in Calne, Wiltshire between 1696 and 1698. This is the place where there is the most frequent occurrence of Richins and Wiltshire borders West Berkshire. Also. the father's name may have been John.
